Why Christians Should Oppose these "Religious Freedom" Bills

I'm a Christian, and I am vehemently opposed to this "Religious Freedom" bill in Indiana signed into law today. I'm also opposed to a similar bill in Georgia. These bills and laws aren't about religious freedom, they are a way to justify discrimination and treating people like second class citizens. Worst of all, they are using Christianity as a shield for actions that are the very antithesis of what Jesus taught. It's utterly vile, and if you believe in the Devil, I can assure you that Satan is in full support of it.

Christians need to oppose this law and others like it. These laws make our faith out to be the religion of gay-bashing. Apparently, according to these types of bills, hating gays is so integral to our faith that we need legal protections to continue our unabashed campaign of abuse. Is that really what we want people to think of Christianity, that its primary focus is making sure we can  treat gays as second class citizens? Is that how we want people to think of us?

This Open Letter to Gays

Dear Gays,

First of all, I want you to know that I love you guys. You are some of my favorite celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, Stephen Fry, and John "Captain Jack" Barrowman. Plus, you gay men never get tired of telling me how awesome my hair looks. I've never gotten better compliments.

And of course I support gay marriage. I've come out in support of it before, and I've even tried to reach out to my fellow Christians about how they can come to terms with the inevitability of gay marriage. It's going to happen, now a matter of when, rather than if. It's all over save for the shouting of the rapidly shrinking, soon to be irrelevant, minority.

That's what I want to talk to you about. Because I don't just support marriage between gays, I also encourage it. To be frank, as soon as you are able to be married, I need you need to do it, as a personal favor to me.

How Christians Can be Okay with Gay Marriage

Even when discussing gay marriage I'm still a geek. Oh, my!

So you might have heard President Obama recently announced his support for gay marriage. It’s the first time a sitting President has done this, and it got everyone’s attention. In years past, a sitting President up for re-election would have torpedoed his own chances with such an announcement. But by the looks of it, President Obama didn’t hurt his re-election chances.

I’m not here to talk about the 2012 election, though. What I want to spotlight is the issue of gay marriage and why it’s becoming acceptable for politicians to come out in favor of it. Yes, there are still votes like Amendment One in North Carolina and Prop 8 in California, but overall the tide is turning and America is now more in favor of gay marriage than against it. (50% to 48%)

I have news for a lot of you. Gay marriage is becoming a reality in this nation, and there’s no reversing this trend. It’s going to happen. It might not be this year or next, but by the end of this decade, we’re going to see a lot more states legalize gay marriage, and in the not-so-distant future, be it a Supreme Court ruling like Loving v. Virginia, or a Constitutional Amendment, gay marriage is going to be a reality in this country.

And this puts a lot of Christians in a quandary. All our lives, we Christians have been told that gays are evil, that legalizing homosexual activity, let alone allowing gays to marry, would be the end of civilization. If we let this happen, God would strike us down Sodom-and-Gomorrah-style. So how are we Christians going to deal with this new reality, how are we to behave in a world where gay marriage is becoming the norm?
